Here is a rundown on all the maintenance I regularly do on my 2006 Yamaha R6. Click on the links for in depth guides on how to accomplish these 
tasks.
1. Oil Change every 2000 miles. This is accompanied with a new oil filter.
2. If the bike is dirty, I wash and wax it.
3. New tires approximately every 6,500 miles.
4. Lubricate chain at least every 800 miles. I try to do it every second fuel fill up, optimally.
5. Cover the bike when in storage. This will keep dust and other airborne crap from polluting your paint. If you don’t cover the bike it’s a great idea to clay the bike after you wash it.
6. Chain adjustment approximately every 2,000 miles.

If the steering is working correctly and it is not leaking try taking it to a car wash and soak it with just the wax solution from the car wash and see if that will stop the noise………
